Behold, the wages of the labourers who mowed your fields, which you kept back by fraud, are crying out against you, and the cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord of hosts. You have lived on the earth in luxury and in self-indulgence. You have fattened your hearts in a day of slaughter. You have condemned and murdered the righteous person. He does not resist you.
Today, this article in the Sydney Morning Herald (SMH) reported,
When Victoria became the first state to criminalise wage theft in June 2020, it was seen as a big step forward in the fight against systemic underpayment of wages in Australia.
Queensland followed and in December the federal government promised criminal penalties for wage theft as part of its industrial relations reforms.
Fast forward to today and little seems to have changed. The Fair Work Ombudsman continues to issue press releases like confetti, outing companies every few days for questionable workplace practices. In the past month alone 10 security businesses, Chatime bubble tea, restaurants, medical centres, a toy retailer and an IT services business have been pinged by the regulator for short-changing workers.
As I wrote before, the housing price bubble cause housing cost to be prohibitive, which in turn impede the formation of new family units. When you combine that with rampant wage theft, which predominantly affects young people, you further discourages family formation. When young people are no longer forming new family units, they no longer shift towards Conservatism and as a result, remain under the grasps of the Left. This explains the rise in popularity of Marxism among young people. These two trends help to doom Conservatives demographically.
Businesses are doing the wrong thing by being cheap to the point of illegality. The latest wage theft scandal involves the trucking industry:
“Companies like this one come in cheap to win the job but then subcontract the work out to owner-drivers, who are then left to try and safely put a truck on the road for less and less every year. This race to the bottom has made trip truck driving one of the most dangerous jobs in Australia,” he says.
Wage theft in Australia is rampant and deteriorating over the years. It is a sign of the deteriorating moral fabric of the nation. This will push young people further towards the arms of Marxism.
The Bible condemns wage theft
There are plenty of Bible verses condemning wage theft:
You shall not oppress a hired worker who is poor and needy, whether he is one of your brothers or one of the sojourners who are in your land within your towns. You shall give him his wages on the same day, before the sun sets (for he is poor and counts on it), lest he cry against you to the LORD, and you be guilty of sin.Deuteronomy 24:14-15
You shall not oppress your neighbour or rob him. The wages of a hired worker shall not remain with you all night until the morning.Leviticus 19:13
The Lord takes his place in court and rises to judge his people. He enters into judgment against the elders and leaders of his people saying, “It is you who have ruined my vineyard; the plunder from the poor is in your housesIsaiah 3:14
Why have we fasted, and you see it not?Isiah 58:3
Why have we humbled ourselves, and you take no knowledge of it?’
Behold, in the day of your fast you seek your own pleasure,
and oppress all your workers.
He who oppresses the poor shows contempt for their Maker, but whoever is kind to the needy honours GodProverbs 14:31
And the most hard-hitting verses condemning wage-theft is:
Behold, the wages of the labourers who mowed your fields, which you kept back by fraud, are crying out against you, and the cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord of hosts. You have lived on the earth in luxury and in self-indulgence. You have fattened your hearts in a day of slaughter. You have condemned and murdered the righteous person. He does not resist you.James 5:4-6
Wage theft is a national moral issue
There is only so much the government can do. They can criminalise wage theft, but if businesses do not obey the law and only stop when caught and threatened with criminal penalties, it shows that we have a deeper moral problem.
This deeper moral problem has long-term political repercussion. Make no mistake, the long-term political repercussion is disadvantageous to Conservatives, to put it mildly. To put it bluntly, wage theft will contribute to dooming Conservatives demographically.
For Conservatives, it will do them no favours by being silent on this issue. Silence means complicity. It cedes the moral high ground to the Left, who are more than pleased to take up this cause by fighting this issue. And while we are at it, it will further help Conservatives to speak out about the housing bubble issue too.
If you ever attend Conservative activists meetings, you will notice that the vast majority of the activists have grey hair. This should be a warning sign that demographics will doom the Conservatives eventually.
